Located between the Jetty Point and The Westin Langkawi, the famed and recently re-opened ‘Charlie’s Bar & Grill’ is without a doubt THE dining venue with the most spectacular view in the whole of Kuah! With a layout that stretches along the coastline, there are only two rows of tables. So regardless of where you choose to take a seat, you are sure to enjoy great vistas of the marina!
Although part of the prestigious ‘Royal Langkawi Yacht Club’, Charlie’s has a casual, relaxed atmosphere – welcoming club members and outside guests alike. Keeping with the nautical theme, the walls are decorated with fishing nets, antique oars and tillers and atmospheric photographs of yachts with white sails glittering against the infinite blue of the sea.
Sure to quickly become a preferred breakfast venue for yachties, resident expats and locals alike, Charlie’s serves a hearty ‘American Breakfast’ with hash browns, grilled tomatoes, baked beans, eggs, chicken sausages and even your favorite bacon! If you like to start your day on a healthy note, you can alternatively order a bowl of cereals or a tropical platter with juicy pineapple, watermelon, orange, honeydew and papaya. Whether you are a fan of freshly brewed coffee, cappuccino or caffe latte or prefer in the mornings a cup of English tea – your favorite is available.
When it comes to lunch and dinner, Charlie’s menu is designed to appeal to tastes as eclectic as the vibrant blend of its diners. And so you will find hearty burgers and sandwiches, Malaysian favorites as well as popular western dishes.
Stopping by for a quick bite? A beef or a chicken burger or the delicious sandwich with grilled sirloin with BBQ sauce served on a toasted baguette with coleslaw and fries may be the perfect choice.
But to make the most of the amazing view, you better plan for a looong relaxed dining experience, starting with a ‘Caesar salad’, a ‘Mediterranean mezze platter’ or a ‘Creamy mushroom soup’. Eager to sample some local specialties? If so, order ‘Beef Rendang’ – a grandmother’s recipe of tender beef with local spices served with rice, or try the signature ‘Clay-pot noodles’ in thick gravy with vegetables, prawns, chicken and eggs.
If you crave western fare, the ‘Grilled beef strip loin with crushed pepper sauce’, ‘Pan fried Spanish mackerel with herbs and lemon-parsley yogurt sauce’ or the ‘BBQ spare ribs au jus’ served with herb mashed potatoes and baby vegetables’ are simply delicious! Or you could try ‘Al dente spaghetti aglio olio’ and other great dishes from the pasta menu.
Make sure you leave some space for dessert, though! The baked apple pie served with vanilla ice cream and raisins is to die for. And if you are a little adventurous, you should definitely try the ice cream made of the famous durian considered the local king of fruits!
Planning a get-together with friends? Reserve the ‘Commodore Table’ that accommodates up to 10 guests. Seated on high chairs, you are sure to feel like the high-rank naval officers calling the shots :-). – And very likely to fall in love with the large rustic table made from a Katung tree so giant, it was also used to design the bar.
The raw, masculine feel of the wood lends the bar counter so much character, you are sure to stick around for more than one drink. Whether a fan of Tiger, Heineken or Guinness Stout – the choice of beer leaves little to be desired. And whether you order red or white wine or choose Cuba Libre, Mojito or a Singapore Sling from the classical cocktail menu – savored while you enjoy the evening breeze and watch the spectacular sunset above the marina – it’s sure to make for a perfect start of a great evening!
