Looking from afar, luxury resorts often seem to operate in a ‘parallel universe’, isolated from the reality experienced by ordinary people who live in surrounding kampongs. But first impressions tend to be misleading…

As John Donne said:’ No man is an island, entire of itself, but a tiny piece of a continent…’ And so, when Teluk Datai Resorts Sdn Bhd, the investment holding company that owns The Datai and surrounding land, learnt about the challenges experienced in one of the primary schools in direct neighborhood, they took initiative!

Partnering with PINTAR, a foundation passionate about changing the lives of children from impoverished families and under served communities by implementing programs that aim at Promoting Intelligence, Nurturing Talent and Advocating Responsibility, TELUK DATAI RESORTS SDN BHD adopted the primary school SK Ewa in Ayer Hangat district.

Funding advanced training for teachers, complementary tutorial classes, acceleration programs and a variety of extra-curricular activities, their involvement truly makes a difference! In only two years, the results in English language went up by more than 8%, the overall pass rate improved by 6.26% and a school that used to lag far behind others ranked based on the recent UPSR trial exams as fourth among 21 primary schools in Langkawi! The students recently won 2nd place in a scientific ‘PINTAR Battle Bot Challenge – a robotic competition’ entered by 105 PINTAR schools, and one of the graduates received a silver medal in a ‘Public Speaking Contest’ with participants from all over Malaysia.

When asked about her goals, the straight A student, Faziatul Nazirah Binti Ishak, shared that she would like to become a doctor of medicine. With suchan outstanding report card, she is well on her way to turn her dream into reality! But judging based on the number of excellence awards handed out during the ‘End of School Celebration’ by Anthony Sebastian, Senior Vice President of Destination Resorts and Hotels and Nordin Osman, Langkawi Deputy Education District Officer, she won’t be the only one.

With managers from various departments of The Datai frequently visiting the school to share their work experience and create awareness for exciting career opportunities in the hospitality industry, a decade from now, some of the current pupils may welcome you at The Datai, confidently handling your check-in and giving you proudly a tour of the iconic property…
