Malaysia’s sailing squad emerged as the best team in the IODA’s 2009 World Sailing Championship in the Optimist class in Niteroi, Brazil which ended Saturday.

The win is a gift in conjunction with the Merdeka Day on Aug 31, said Mohd Afendy Abdullah, general manager of the Malaysian Yachting Association. (MYA)

In an e-mail to Bernama here today, Mohd Afendy said with this Malaysia lifts the The Miami Heralds Trophy.
He said Malaysia also won the silver medal through the national junior sailor Mohamad Faizal Norizan in the individual category.

Peruvian sailor, Sinelair Jones, took the gold and Argentinian Ignacio Rogala the bronze. Another national sailor, Mohamad Farhan, took sixth place, Ahmad Latif Khan Ali Sabri Khan the 9th and Ahmad Shukri Abdul Aziz was 26th.

He said the success of the three sailors being in the top ten was something to be proud of. He said this was in line with Malaysia’s hosting of the the same championship next year in Pokok Asam, Langkawi.      217 sailors from 45 countries took part.

Malaysia will host the IODA (International Optimist Dinghy Association) World Sailing Championship (WSC) in 2010 at the National Yachting Training Centre in Langkawi.
