Freshly graduated from Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia in 2008, Shirley was not permanantly employed for 7 months. Although she holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, she worked part-time as an accountant and as a salesperson after she graduated – due the the economy downturn, and partly because the lack of job opportunities of related fields in Langkawi. However, she did not foresee herself going any further if she continued to keep changing jobs.
